Premiere for DF-ING’s patented ‘MtH 2.0’ process

For the past two years, the experts at DF-ING have been working with the further development of the Main-to-House sewer rehabilitation method. Building on the original, acquired MtH system, they created an entirely new process: MtH 2.0. This involved refining milling techniques, searching for the ideal liner, and finding solutions for hard-to-reach bend sections in pipes – all with the goal of improving trenchless house connection rehabilitation directly from the main sewer and making it possible even under challenging conditions. This is urgently needed, as the rehabilitation of private connections poses major challenges for many cities and municipalities: uncooperative homeowners, unclear ownership structures, or inaccessible inspection shafts often complicate rehabilitation work, especially in densely built-up residential areas.

First Full-Scale Operation Using the In-House Engineered System

IIn May 2021, after a careful planning phase, the time had come in Bremen: MtH 2.0 was to be used for the first time to rehabilitate 34 house connections in a metropolitan area – with brand-new technology and specially developed tools. A premiere on this scale!

After cleaning, visual inspection of the main sewer, and precise measurement of the connections using CCTV camera robotics, the milling robot was deployed. This high-tech tool is a specialized bend cutter that advances from the main sewer into the lateral connections to perform targeted preparation work for rehabilitation – such as pre-milling or mapping inflows within the pipe. The push-lift system used by DF-ING’s trained experts for projects like this is a custom-built, proprietary solution. Equally unique are the special modules integrated into the bend unit. These ensure that the liner for the house connection can be inverted smoothly and quickly from the main sewer without folds, uniformly inflated with compressed air, and then cured rapidly using heat and steam. Thanks to cutting-edge technology like temperature sensors, special resins, and rapid curing, the result is an exceptionally high-quality interior lining of the pipe

Unique technology that sets new standards

In just eleven days, the DF-ING experts were able to rehabilitate 34 DN 150 lateral connections in Bremen, each up to 5.5 meters in length, from a DN 250–450 main sewer. A successful premiere – and a milestone for the DF-ING team, which had spent years developing this advancement of the Main-to-House method. ‘This successful first large-scale deployment of our self-developed rehabilitation system was a major achievement for us,’ says Roman Debes, Managing Director of DF-ING. ‘With the MtH 2.0 method, we have succeeded in developing a technically advanced, environmentally friendly, trenchless rehabilitation system for house connections. Our company is the only one in Germany capable of carrying out this patented process at such high quality under controlled conditions.’

And the large-scale project in Bremen was a major success in more ways than one: the challenges that had to be overcome led to further developments. For example, with the milling robot – after the rehabilitation work, DF-ING engineers developed an even more maneuverable version, designed to reach difficult-to-access connections more effectively. These technical advancements are not only pioneering for the industry. The municipal client was highly satisfied, and further contracts from ‘hanseWasser Bremen’ followed.
